Get a Driver's License
Getting a driver's license is now an option. Up until a few years ago, only foreign diplomats were given the option to drive themselves around. These days many people are doing it, and with rental car companies renting cars at as low as $20 a day it's an affordable option.
Driving conditions in China are very different from those in western countries and if you are faint of heart it's best you not continue down this path. This option should be left to those of you who live to drive, and if that is you, then at least buckle up.
Even though driving in China may seem chaotic to onlookers, there is a system to it, and it's aggressive. Expect to be cut off, but also expect to cut off others without the others batting an eye. There aren't too many differences in the road rules. The differences are more in the style and philosophy of driving. And if you want to become a master, here's how:
Required Documents:
1. A passport and Chinese visa.
2. A residents permit for China. A one year permit is needed for a permanent driver's license. A 3 month + permit is needed for a temporary license.
3. Current license must be translated into Chinese before application. This can be done at Shanghai Foreign Language University (Waiguo Yue Da Shui) located near Hongkou Football Stadium off Zhongshan Bei Yi Rd. Or the Shanghai Foreign Affairs Translator Association (183 Tiyuhui West Rd.).
4. Recent pictures need be taken.
5. A medical examination will need to be taken. Call the Shanghai Vehicle Management Bureau at 021 6516 8168 to ascertain which are participating hopitals.
Procedure:
1. Complete driver's license application form.
2. Take the regulation knowledge and communication exam.
3. Take the driving test. If you have been driving for more than 3 years, this test is unnecessary.
4. Pay a 20RMB fee.
